Staffellauf

The Staffellauf (English: relay race) was a nationwide theatre project initiative that sent two small apple tree seedlings across the country as a sign for more sustainability in theatres. 49 German theatres, theatre festivals and independent ensembles covered a total of almost 3000 kilometres on foot, by bike or by train.

The outstanding thing about this project is the community that has formed to stand up for a greater good. Throughout the country, theatre makers got in touch with others and cared for and passed on the trees with great tenderness and seriousness. Each individual traveller was the protagonist of a common goal and a common vision of the future, symbolically travelling through Germany on a bicycle.
